Elephantito helps dressing your children with love just a little bit easier

Elephantito helps dressing your children with love just a little bit easier

When the holidays come round, us mothers turn, almost instinctively, to the traditions our families have been collecting and curating for decades. Beloved songs, special dishes, family jokes— We bring them out, along with the Christmas lights and decor, when December strikes again.

Fashion is no exception. When it comes to holiday meals, we dress our little ones in clothing that evokes our own childhoods, even those of our parents and grandparents: classic pieces, like Mary Janes or loafers, dresses with dainty collars, gentlemanly button-downs. This is because the holidays are more than just a way to mark the passing of years. Holidays are really an occasion to celebrate what hasn’t changed, what will never change: Our love for each other. Our gratitude at being able to gather around the table. We put our children in timeless clothing to remind them that what we feel for them is timeless, too, and always will be.

Elephantito is your partner in this priceless pastime. Our motto— a modern approach to classics— is the spirit of our every collection. Our ballerina flats, our delicate sandals, our dapper driver loafers come in tones both new and natural to go with every outfit your little ones pull together. Our updated details make our aesthetic timeless with a twist, perfect for 21st century occasions. Most importantly, our shoes are made with love. It makes dressing your children with love just a little bit easier.

Fifteen Years Together

Fifteen Years Together

This summer, Elephantito celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. The branches of our family tree are always growing. From our fair-trade factory in Peru and our Miami offices to all the corners of the world explored by our clients, it’s been a decade and a half of well-loved shoes.

At Elephantito, celebrating our team really means celebrating our clients, because it’s your loyalty that keeps us going. So unwrap your gifts online, with anniversary promos and summer sales that just keep on coming.

Like all anniversaries, fifteen years together has a particular theme: Crystal. We think it’s fitting. For most, Crystal means fine, impeccably-crafted, fairy tale worthy products— and Elephantito covers all these bases, with our focus on elegant construction. But more importantly, Crystal is transparent, just like our own fair-trade, socially responsible business model.

Elephantito is all about the inside of our shoes: not just in regard to flexible soles and breathable lining, but also the chain of production and trained shoe artisans responsible for each one of our special pairs. What is behind an Elephantito shoe? Love, we say. Not simply for our clients, but for our employees, hard at work in our fair-trade factory in Peru, known for its socially-conscious labor laws. Our co-founders keep in daily contact with supervisors and make monthly visits to make certain that we are delivering on our promises of fair salaries, maternity leave, social security benefits, paid vacations, family wages, and more. Our leathers and fabrics are sourced naturally, too.

We care about every person, stitch, and scrap of leather involved. It should be crystal clear by now. Congratulations to us, to you, to our family far and wide for a decade and a half of timeless design.

Elephantito Mary Janes

Elephantito Mary Janes

A pair of Mary Janes come with all kinds of classic connotations: the quintessential, well-dressed American children; the perfectly coiffed ponytails; the wholesome crowd at baseball games and birthday parties. Well-crafted, comfortable, durable, but so feminine with its famous instep strap, Mary Janes have been a staple for little girls for as long as we can remember.

Sometimes, however, classic styles need a dose of modern energy and values. Most little girls in the United States aren’t called Mary or Jane anymore. Richly diverse, our little superstars have names from all over the world: from Latin America, China, Ghana, Indonesia, France, Russia, and more. They wear Mary Janes to their robotics competitions or debate events or meetings of their service clubs.

Elephantito has carried the aesthetic of the old Mary Jane into the new generation.  Our Mary Janes have durable, flexible soles, because we don’t expect little girls to stand by the sidelines when boys are wild at play.  Like all our shoes, our Mary Janes are lovingly made by expert shoe artisans. This timeless construction comes to life in metallics— gold and silver and a bronzy blush— and flamingo pinks, chili reds, and fierce patents. Bright outsoles, flower decals, leopard prints, suede peek-a-boo styles. We like to say our Mary Janes aren’t for plain Janes, after all.

Elephantito is all about new takes on old styles. There’s nothing better than continuity through change.  Our Mary Janes are available for babies, toddlers, kids, and tweens, because classic is more adaptable than you might think.

Here comes... the flower girl!

Here comes... the flower girl!

Flower girl duty is not something we take lightly here at Elephantito. Especially not as destination wedding season approaches.

Behind every beach-front ceremony in an exotic locale is a wedding party whose advance planning made everything possible— little flower girls and ring bearers included.
Silk Dress

As they make their way down the aisle before the bride, flower girls remind the audience that inside every woman is a little girl who has made a life for herself. Their attire serves as a hint of the bridal aesthetic to come, those floral notes and details. For those of us moms who were flower girls ourselves, it’s easy to conjure our special feelings of awe and magic from that time, our sense of being involved in something wonderful and bigger than our own experiences. It was our first love story and our first job— all at the same time.

Elephantito is in your corner when it comes to wedding prep. As our clients zip off this summer to warm venues all over the world, we’ve constructed the perfect white sandals and shoes to support your little ones down the aisle in style. Our Ballerina flats, Mary Janes, and sandals with flower details and delicate straps are appropriately romantic for any age; they are also comfortable and durable enough to keep your children focusing on the excitement at hand, rather than their feet. Our classic flexible leather is in play, and our soft, breathable lining, too, perfect for keeping cool in the tropical heat and getting confident on the dance floor.

Like Spring, our children are the best season of our lives

Like Spring, our children are the best season of our lives

When spring arrives, it’s an occasion. As parents, we welcome it with impressive spring cleaning and wardrobe changes, with a return to the outdoors and a grateful bit of sun. There are new flowers peeking out in the garden, joyful Easter brunches and egg hunts. The world is lighter and brighter than it was just a few weeks before.
When we design our Spring collections every year, we’re guided by the understanding that being around your children is a little like having Spring arrive every day. Children are always blooming, growing, and reinventing themselves. There’s nothing drab, cold, or wintery about them. And really, they are a chance for us to do it all over again. Like Spring, our children are the best season of our lives.

That’s why at Elephantito, Easter is our favorite holiday, a focal point of our Spring collections. With room for both innovation and timeless return, our Easter-inspired clothing and shoes capture a kind of freshness that will always come back in style.

And there’s no need to worry about convincing your child to pose for those all-so-special- and sometimes too difficult to achieve!— family photos. Our comfortable, durable, kid-friendly products will do all the convincing for you. Energetic pastels and flexible, breathable leather will be your children’s best ally in the annual Easter egg hunt. With a win like that under their belts, who wouldn’t want to pose and smile?

Our baby shoes

Our baby shoes

At Elephantito, our work as designers is made meaningful by our experience as mothers. Every stitch, every silhouette, every insole is aligned with some part of the children we love. We make our shoes strong because we want our children to play big and dream bigger. We employ only the finest leathers because we want our children to know that, growing or not, they are worth every investment.

Our baby shoes have blossomed out of some of our most precious mommy memories: our first few months as mothers, the quiet wonder we felt when we looked at our baby’s perfect hands, perfect feet. Tender, pink, delicate, but still somehow possessing this great capacity for strength. We thought to ourselves, “One day these little hands and feet will change the world.” As we watch our children mature, we feel that awareness more powerfully than ever.

That’s why Elephantito baby shoes strike the perfect balance between fragility and strength.  So often we see babies who are beautifully dressed but have their feet bare or covered in a simple pair of socks. Hands and feet: these are the tools that will guide and carry your baby’s journey throughout life. Elephantito’s leather baby shoes, supple and carefully made, protect and honor these adventures to come. Mary Janes, sandals, booties, loafers, moccasins—all in soft, pliable leathers— are a signal to the world that your baby is going places.

What does festive really mean?

What does festive really mean?

Every year, when the time comes to rethink and reinspire our holiday collection, we start by asking ourselves, what does festive really mean? This year, more than ever before, we’ve found festivity in the little things: not just the massive Christmas tree in the park, but the special, single ornament that catches our eye. The delicate smell of our favorite holiday candle over the huge display of lights at our local mall. Not the presents, but the glittering bows on top, the perfectly creased paper.

Translating this view of festivity in the finer details into our aesthetic was no big deal. That’s because our motto, “A modern approach to classics,” does just this, making a sensibility come to life in little moments where the classic and the contemporary finally come together. Holiday attire is not about over-the-top colors and prints. It’s about highlighting the faces and features of the kids you love—not distracting from them— and including something in their outfit that reminds them this is a time for magic, happiness, and a little sparkle.  The right holiday outfit reminds you of all the holidays that have come before, for you and the family you were born into, and all the holidays that are to come, for the family you have made. It's joyous, but also timeless.

With our beautifully constructed leather and our famously flexible soles, we decided that festivity this year would start from the bottom up, in Elephantito footwear.  Shoes are the ideal celebratory note to make any smart outfit holiday-dinner-ready. When it comes to Elephantito, they’re also an opportunity to start the new year with your child’s most comfortably clad foot forward. Metallic shoes, like ballerina flats, slippers, and Mary Janes, add some high-end shine to any look. Patent leather shoes and boots— in red, gold, or sleek black—  do the same. Hand made driver loafers or shined booties turn your little boy into a gentleman right in time for New Year’s Eve. For our extra cool kids, super luxe sneakers can give a cheerful edge to any traditional outfit.  The options at Elephantito are never ending: gold slip-ons, glitter Rockstar high-tops, suede and metallic baby shoes, scalloped baby booties, bright moccasins, and classic golfer shoes.

Paired with our delicately made dresses, skirts, trousers, and dress shirts, they’re a must-need for any holiday head-to-toe look. They’re the little thing that makes all the difference.

“Dressing up” for Thanksgiving - a real purpose

“Dressing up” for Thanksgiving - a real purpose

Every year, right around Thanksgiving, we get our gratitude speeches ready. Talking to our children about being thoughtful and appreciative of the gifts they’ve been given is an important tradition, one we hope our families never outgrow. It’s a time to think deeply about togetherness and the qualities this brings out in each of us. While sitting around the table and passing around food, the thing we wish for every year is that our kids see the love we put into this holiday and every day in general. We want them to be grateful because gratitude is a cornerstone of both goodness and happiness, and what more could we ask for them?
Here’s something, however, that escapes us sometimes. How often do we ask ourselves if we are grateful enough? Do we think about how lucky we are to live our lives and raise the children we have? Thanksgiving is a time for us, too, to reflect on this appreciation and find ways to integrate it into our lives. One way to do this is through what seems like a simple parenting decision— dressing your child in Elephantito, especially on Thanksgiving day.
Golfers
“Dressing up” serves a real purpose, even if our instinct is to think it is superficial. It shows respect for the occasion, marking it as different from other days of the year. It reminds us that it is a day for making memories, because we always like to remember ourselves looking our best. That’s because caring—about anything or anyone, including yourself— is one way to show appreciation for what you have. And the same goes for our children, too. We love their joy, sense of freedom, and all the ways in which they change, grow, and surprise us. We’re grateful to give our lives to them and we show them that by always giving them the best we can (and with Elephantito’s pricing, we make the best accessible to every parent out there). When we dress our child up in quality clothing, we crystallize them one at moment forever, create a memory to hold onto as they grow another inch, age another year. It says to them: you’re worth it. It says to them: we want you to carry this day, this dinner, in your hearts forever. It says: we hope you appreciate us— and everything— too.

When it comes to apparel for adults, we’ve gotten accustomed to the idea that the dresses, blouses, and suits we covet will always look a little more crisp and perfect on display than they will when we put them on before the mirror in the morning. That’s because most of the clothing out there for adults is designed with mannequins in mind. When it comes to Elephantito, we have a different ethos: our clothing is inspired by living, breathing children, with all their liveliness and personality. We believe that no matter how many hours we spend sketching silhouettes and looking at samples, our products will only ever be “finished” when they’re loved by a child who has made them their own. We invest in classic, timeless cuts and styles because we know that this aesthetic leaves more room for individuality than any other. It’s a bit of a running joke between us founders. We can put two lovely children in identical dresses or pants and the pieces will end up looking completely different, though united still by an aura of love, confidence, and quality.

We have a favor to ask of you, our favorite (all of you!) customers. It’s a fun one. Show us our finished pieces, please! Nothing makes our day more than seeing a picture of your special little someone dressed in Elephantito. On an artistic level, it means more than we can say to see our visions and designs come to fruition. And as mothers ourselves, we love to know that we are in some way part of the lives of your beautiful, bright children, facilitating their fun and their growth.

It's time for the Holiday Card Photo Shoot

It's time for the Holiday Card Photo Shoot

This week’s blog starts out with an image we’re pretty sure comes to mind for every parent when we say the holidays are approaching: the half-exciting, half-dreaded holiday card photo shoot. We’re pretty confident that you remember the squirming, the blurry shots, or the many, many times you begged your children to “say cheese!” We’re also pretty sure that you remember just how beautiful the final product is— a picture of the most important little people in your lives, a picture you are going to share with all of your close friends and loved ones, a capstone of another wonderful year of raising a family. Elephantito is here to make sure that this time around your children are not only adorable and well-dressed, but also comfortable enough to look at ease, to look like their wonderful, natural selves.

The Holidays arrive every year, but when they do, they always manage to feel like a bit of a surprise. First there is fall, with all the back to school chaos, and then the candy craze of Halloween, and then Thanksgiving, with family in town and turkeys to baste- and then it’s December, and we hardly know how we’re going to get everything done before the holidays arrive!

Elephantito makes it all a little easier. This is because we make shopping for your children’s holiday clothes a simple, joyful process. We put it all together for you, from head to toe. From perfect little loafers and preppy sweaters to chic sneakers paired with a classic Christmas dress, trust us: we understand exactly what your child needs when it comes to this special season of style.

The Holidays are multipurpose. They’re about family time, having fun, enjoying a break from work and school, and also making memories that are deeply tied to our cultures and belief systems . This means that our holiday clothing— especially when it comes to our children— needs to be multipurpose too. They need to be more than just stylish. They need to be comfortable, and flexible, made for both crawling around the Christmas tree and sitting to light the menorah. The holidays are about giving, and the gift of comfort and confidence is a priceless one.

Growing Up with Elephantito

Growing Up with Elephantito

From the start of Elephantito, we couldn’t have imagined a more perfect scenario. We were two women, passionate in the same way about quality clothing and ethical business, pouring over sample leathers and launching a factory in Peru, we were—and are—teammates united by something even greater than our ambitions: our two daughters. Marialex and Vicky, both the same age, classmates in our local school, and best friends since they were three years old.

Vicky

We knew early on they would be our muses. The well-made, comfortable, and stylish dresses, boots, and ballerina flats we were constantly seeking out for their closets became our mission statement. We watched them run outside and asked ourselves how to balance fashion and function. As they became tweens, we followed their changing style and designed head to toe outfits that were both age-appropriate and chic.

Using our imagination, hard work, and business sense to dress our daughters well will always be something we are proud of. At every birthday party, school play, or picnic, we smiled when we saw how our daughters stood out —not because their clothing was expensive or flashy, but because it was tasteful, timeless, and elegant.

Our girls looked loved. It is only now that they are getting older (teenagers!) that we understand how impactful that was for them. They carry themselves with a special confidence; they know how to invest their time and energy and make lasting choices. They also don’t compromise on their comfort and happiness for the sake of looking a certain way, because while wearing Elephantito, they had it all.
